Tools required for disassembly: iPhone tool kit
(If you are replacing a badly cracked digitizer glass, cover the screen
in sticky tape before starting). First turn your phone off and remove the sim tray
by pushing your sim removal tool into the hole circled below. If you
don't have a sim removal tool, use a paperclip.
![iPhone 5 disassembly stage 1]()
Next remove the 2 pentalobe screws, circled below.
![iPhone 5 disassembly stage 2]()
Now attach a suction cup near the bottom of the screen. If your screen
is cracked, try and place the suction cup in an area which isn't damaged.
![iPhone 5 disassembly stage 3]()
Pull the suction cup up and you should lift the screen enough to allow
you to get the edge of a plastic tool under the edge of the screen, as pictured
below.
![iPhone 5 disassembly stage 4]()
Run your plastic tool along both sides of the screen. There are ribbon
cables holding the screen in place near the top, so don't run your plastic tool
along the top edge of the screen.
![iPhone 5 disassembly stage 5]()
Lift the screen up and you'll see a metal cover held in place by 3
screws. Remove these screws.
![iPhone 5 disassembly stage 6]()
The metal cover is now free.
![iPhone 5 disassembly stage 7]()
You now have access to three ribbon cables, indicated below. Each has a
plug and socket like connection, so lever each up, away from the circuit board.
![iPhone 5 disassembly stage 8]()
The screen is now free.
![iPhone 5 disassembly stage 9]()
If you are replacing the screen and your new screen does not come with
the earpiece, front facing camera, proximity sensor, home button and sensor, then
you'll need to remove them from your old screen. To remove the earpiece, remove
the 2 screws circled below.
![iPhone 5 disassembly stage 10]()
The earpiece and metal cover are now free.
![iPhone 5 disassembly stage 11]()
To remove the flex ribbon cable for the front facing camera and
proximity sensor, first apply some heat with a hair dryer for around 30 seconds,
which will soften the adhesive holding it in place, then use a flat head
screwdriver to carefully lift the cable free, from the point indicated by the
screwdriver below. Then pull the tab, indicated by the arrow below, towards you.
![iPhone 5 disassembly stage 12]()
The flex ribbon cable is now free.
![iPhone 5 disassembly stage 13]()
Below is a closer view of the flex ribbon cable.
![iPhone 5 disassembly stage 14]()
To remove the home button and sensor, first remove the 2 screws circled
below. Now apply some heat with a hair dryer for around 30 seconds, which will
soften the adhesive holding the sensor in place, then carefully pull the home
button sensor away from the back of the screen.
![iPhone 5 disassembly stage 15]()
Carefully pull the home button sensor away from the back of the screen.
![iPhone 5 disassembly stage 16]()
The home button sensor is now free. Next push the home button, indicated
by the arrow below, from the other side of the screen and it will fall out.
![iPhone 5 disassembly stage 17]()
The home button is now free. Next remove the 2 screws circled below.
![iPhone 5 disassembly stage 18]()
Now remove the 2 screws circled below. Also remove the 2 screws on the
other side.
![iPhone 5 disassembly stage 19]()
The metal cover can now be removed from the back of the old screen. If
you only want to replace the LCD screen, you don't need to follow the
guide any further, simply reattach the parts to your new screen and reverse the whole procedure for reassembly. If you've found this disassembly guide useful, please support formymobile.co.uk and order the tools and parts you need from our site. We ship worldwide! Continue
following the rest of the guide for complete disassembly of your iPhone 5.
![iPhone 5 disassembly stage 20]()
Next, remove the 3 screws circled below.
![iPhone 5 disassembly stage 21]()
The 3 screws have been removed and the two metal covers are now free.
![iPhone 5 disassembly stage 22]()
The ribbon cable from the battery, indicated below, needs to be
disconnected. This ribbon cable has a plug and socket like connection, so lever
it up, away from the circuit board.
![iPhone 5 disassembly stage 23]()
To lift the battery free, pull the tab indicated by the arrow below.
Some force is required. You may need to heat the battery using a hair dryer on a
low setting for around 30 seconds. This will soften the adhesive holding the
battery in place and allow you to lift it out.
![iPhone 5 disassembly stage 24]()
The battery is now free.
![iPhone 5 disassembly stage 25]()
Another 2 ribbon cables need to be disconnected, indicated below.
Although each cable is slightly different, each has a plug and socket like
connection, so lever each up, away from the circuit board.
![iPhone 5 disassembly stage 26]()
The 2 ribbon cables are now disconnected.
![iPhone 5 disassembly stage 27]()
Now disconnected the 3 ribbon cables indicated below. Disconnect ribbon
number 1 first, then 2 then 3. Make sure ribbon cables 2 and 3 are disconnected
at both ends. Again, each ribbon cable has a plug and socket like connection, so
disconnect them in the same way as the others.
![iPhone 5 disassembly stage 28]()
The ribbon cables in the last stage have now been disconnected.
![iPhone 5 disassembly stage 29]()
Next remove the 6 screws, circled below.
![iPhone 5 disassembly stage 30]()
Now remove the 5 screws, circled below.
![iPhone 5 disassembly stage 31]()
Now lift the circuit board from the point indicated by the arrow
below. The circuit board is still connected by the ribbon cable on the other
side, so lift the circuit board up and turn it over, from right to left.
![iPhone 5 disassembly stage 32]()
The circuit board has been flipped over and is almost free.
![iPhone 5 disassembly stage 33]()
Disconnect the ribbon cable circled below. Again, it has a plug and
socket connector, so disconnect it in the same way as the others.
![iPhone 5 disassembly stage 35]()
The circuit board is now free. Now remove the 7 screws, circled
below, and you can lift the loudspeaker/lightening port assembly free.
![iPhone 5 disassembly stage 36]()
The loudspeaker/lightening port assembly is now free.
![iPhone 5 disassembly stage 37]()
Circled below is the part which makes a connection with the home
button sensor. Carefully peel this part back (it's held in place lightly with
adhesive tape) and you'll be able to detach the loudspeaker.
![iPhone 5 disassembly stage 38]()
The loudspeaker is now free.
![iPhone 5 disassembly stage 39]()
Next remove the 7 screws circled below. The vibrating motor will
come loose.
![iPhone 5 disassembly stage 40]()
The screws and vibrating motor are now free. The ribbon cable for
the volume, mute switch and power button, indicated by the arrow below, is held
in place with double sided adhesive tape. Carefully peel this away.
![iPhone 5 disassembly stage 41]()
The volume buttons, mute switch. power button, all the screws and
the ribbon cables have been disconnected. Disassembly is now complete.
Reverse the whole procedure for reassembly. If you've found this disassembly guide useful, please support formymobile.co.uk and order the tools and parts you need from our site. We ship worldwide!
