Microsoft Lumia 640 XL disassembly, screen replacement and repair

Tools required for disassembly: Torx screwdriver set, Mobile phone opening tool, hot air gun or hair dryer

If you are replacing a badly cracked screen, cover it in sticky tape or a screen protector before starting. Remove the back cover by pushing the corners back in the direction shown by the arrows below. Microsoft Lumia 640 XL disassembly stage 1 With the back cover removed, your phone will look like below. Now remove the battery from the point shown. Also remove your sim and memory card. Microsoft Lumia 640 XL disassembly stage 2 Next, remove the ten Torx 4 size screws, circled below. Microsoft Lumia 640 XL disassembly stage 3 To detach the battery compartment, push your plastic tool into the corners indicated and lever it free. Microsoft Lumia 640 XL disassembly stage 4 With the battery compartment removed, your phone will look like below. If you want to remove the loudspeaker and vibrating motor, lever them free from the points indicated below. Microsoft Lumia 640 XL disassembly stage 5 The loudspeaker and vibrating motor have now been removed. Microsoft Lumia 640 XL disassembly stage 6 To remove the ribbon cable, first lever the metal clamp from the point shown below. Then apply heat from a hot air gun or hair dryer to soften the adhesive holding the ribbon cable in place and carefully peel it away. Microsoft Lumia 640 XL disassembly stage 7 The ribbon cable is now free.  Microsoft Lumia 640 XL disassembly stage 8 Now remove the three screws, circled below, and detach the two ribbon cables indicated by the arrows below. Each cable has a plug and socket type connection, so lever up, away from the circuit board, to disconnect. Microsoft Lumia 640 XL disassembly stage 9 To remove the jack socket ribbon cable, apply heat from a hot air gun or hair dryer and then lift from the point shown and carefully peel the cable away.  Microsoft Lumia 640 XL disassembly stage 10 The jack socket ribbon cable is now free. Now lift the brass coloured cable from the point shown and lift the circuit board away from the phone. Microsoft Lumia 640 XL disassembly stage 11 The circuit board is now free. Microsoft Lumia 640 XL disassembly stage 12 If you want to remove the front and rear facing cameras, disconnected the ribbon cables from the points indicated by the arrows below shown. Again, each cable has a plug and socket type connection, so lever up, away from the circuit board to disconnect. If you want to remove the USB cover, circled, simply lift if away from the USB socket. Microsoft Lumia 640 XL disassembly stage 13 The front and rear facing cameras and USB cover are now free. Microsoft Lumia 640 XL disassembly stage 14 To remove the earpiece, circled, simply lift it free. To remove the ribbon cables for the light sensor and side buttons, first apply heat then carefully peel the ribbons away. Microsoft Lumia 640 XL disassembly stage 16 To separate the screen and rear frame, apply heat to the front of the screen for around 60 seconds. Move your heat source all the way around the edge of the screen. This will soften the adhesive tape holding the screen in place.  Microsoft Lumia 640 XL disassembly stage 17 Now slide a plastic tool between the screen and rear frame, starting at the point shown below. Move your tool all the way around the edge of the screen until it comes away from the frame. The screen is well stuck at the top and bottom, so you may need to keep using more heat. Microsoft Lumia 640 XL disassembly stage 18 The screen and frame have now been separated. Disassembly is now complete. Reverse the whole procedure for reassembly.
