If you are replacing a badly cracked screen, cover it in sticky tape or a screen protector before starting. Remove the back cover by pushing the corners in the direction of the arrows below. Microsoft Lumia 640 disassembly stage 1 With the back cover removed, your phone will look like below. Remove the battery, sim, memory card etc. Now remove the black sticker indicated by the arrow below. Microsoft Lumia 640 disassembly stage 2 Next, remove the seven Torx 4 size screws, circled.  Microsoft Lumia 640 disassembly stage 3 Now turn the phone on its side and remove two more screws, remembering not to mix them up with the first seven screws. Microsoft Lumia 640 disassembly stage 4 To separate the battery compartment from the rest of the phone, start by pushing a plastic tool in the join of the housing then run the tool along the join of the battery compartment on the right side and top side of the phone. You will then be able to lift the battery compartment over, from right to left. Microsoft Lumia 640 disassembly stage 5 With the battery compartment open, you have access to two ribbon cables. Microsoft Lumia 640 disassembly stage 6 Below is a close up of the two ribbon cables. Each cable has a plug and socket type connection, so lever up, away from the circuit board to disconnect. Microsoft Lumia 640 disassembly stage 7 The phone is now separated into two halves. To remove the earpiece, circled, simply lift it away from the back of the screen. It's held in place by a sticky gasket, but it will come away quite easily. To remove the ribbon cable for the camera and light sensor, lift from the point indicated by the arrow, then peel the ribbon away. The ribbon is held in place with a little adhesive tape, so if it's well stuck down, use some heat from a hair dryer or hot air gun to soften the adhesive and make removal easier.  Microsoft Lumia 640 disassembly stage 8 The earpiece and ribbon cable are now free. Microsoft Lumia 640 disassembly stage 9 To separate the screen and rear frame, apply heat from a hot air gun or hair dryer for around 60 seconds. Move your heat source all the way around the edge of the screen. This will soften the adhesive tape holding the screen in place. Microsoft Lumia 640 disassembly stage 10 Now slide a plastic tool between the screen and rear frame, starting at the point shown below where there is a recess to push the tool into. Move your tool all the way around the edge of the screen until it comes away from the frame. Apply more heat if the screen is well stuck down. Microsoft Lumia 640 disassembly stage 11 The screen and rear frame have now been separated. If you only want to replace the screen, you don't need to follow the guide any further, simply fit your new screen and reverse the whole procedure for reassembly.
