Tools required for disassembly: Torx 5 screwdriver, Phillips screwdriver, Mobile phone opening tool.

First remove your battery cover by pushing down, in the direction shown by the arrows below. HTC Desire S disassembly stage 1 To remove the battery, flip over (towards you) the part indicated by the arrow in the image below. The battery can then be slid out. HTC Desire S disassembly stage 2 Now remove the five screws circled below. The torx head screws circled in red are longer than the ones circled in white and the screw circled in blue is a Phillips head screw. Make sure they go back in the right place. HTC Desire S disassembly stage 3 Use an opening tool to lever the camera cover off. If you don't have an opening tool then a blunt knife is suitable, though a plastic tool is better as it won't mark the phone. HTC Desire S disassembly stage 5 The camera cover is now free. Now remove the two torx head screws, circled below in red. Next disconnect the cables circled below in white. Each has a plug and socket like connection so lever each one up to disconnect. HTC Desire S disassembly stage 6 Now flip the small circuit board over in the direction shown by the arrows.  HTC Desire S disassembly stage 7 Now lift the back cover from the points indicated by the arrows below (refer to the photo in the next stage). HTC Desire S disassembly stage 8 The entire back cover will come away from the phone, as shown below. HTC Desire S disassembly stage 9 The back cover is now free from the rest of the phone.  HTC Desire S disassembly stage 10 If you want to remove the mini USB socket, turn the back cover over and remove the two screws, circled below. HTC Desire S disassembly stage 11 The mini USB socket is now free. HTC Desire S disassembly stage 12 Next remove the two circled screws and lift the black plastic part free. HTC Desire S disassembly stage 13 Your phone should now look like below. HTC Desire S disassembly stage 14 If you want to remove the loud speaker, turn the black plastic part over and lever the loud speaker out. HTC Desire S disassembly stage 15 The loud speaker is now free. HTC Desire S disassembly stage 16 The arrows below point to two zif connectors which each hold a ribbon cable in place. The white part is a latch that opens and closes on a hinge. Carefully lift each latch up, towards the ribbon, and the ribbon will be free. Below you can see the zif connectors with the latch in the closed position. Refer to the next stage to see the latch in the open position. HTC Desire S disassembly stage 17 Below you can see the latches in the open position. The ribbon cables can now be slid out. HTC Desire S disassembly stage 18 The ribbon cables are now free. Now lift the vibrating motor, indicated by the arrow below, up out of its recess. Now lift the circuit board over from left to right. It will still be connected by another ribbon cable so don't try to pull the circuit board away from the phone yet. HTC Desire S disassembly stage 19 Now disconnect the cable circled below in red. It has a plug and socket like connection so lever it up, away from the circuit board. The circuit board is now free. HTC Desire S disassembly stage 20 The circuit board is now free. To remove the vibrating motor, circled below in white, hold the two wires firmly and pull them away from the circuit board. The ribbon cables for the front and rear cameras are circled below in red. Again each has a zif connector, so flick the black latch up towards the ribbon cable and then pull each camera away from the circuit board. HTC Desire S disassembly stage 21 With the vibrating motor and cameras removed, your phone should look like below. To remove the cable, circled bottom left of the image below, lever it up from the circuit board. To remove the sim and memory card reader, lever up the connector circled bottom right of the image below. HTC Desire S disassembly stage 22 With the cable and sim and memory card reader removed, your phone should look like below. HTC Desire S disassembly stage 23 The ribbon cable for the volume switch, indicated top right of the image below, can be simply peeled away from the phone (it's held in place with double sided tape). The earpiece, below centre, can be levered free. The large orange ribbon cable is stuck to the back of the screen and should be peeled back. HTC Desire S disassembly stage 24 The volume ribbon cable now free and earpiece are now free. To remove the touch screen/digitiser, first heat the front of the screen for around 30 seconds using a hot air gun or hair dryer. Then push your screwdriver into the holes circled below. This will raise the screen slightly on the other side and allow you to slide your opening tool all the way around the join of the screen. HTC Desire S disassembly stage 25 Slide your opening tool all the way around the join of the screen to release it. It's held in place with double sided sticky tape so should come away without much force. HTC Desire S disassembly stage 26 The touch screen/digitizer is now free. HTC Desire S disassembly stage 27 To remove the LCD screen, peel back the silver sticker indicated below and then push the screen out slightly. Again, this will raise the screen slightly on the other side and allow you to slide something like an old credit card under the screen to release it. HTC Desire S disassembly stage 28 Slide something like an old credit card right under the left side of screen. Don't lever the screen. HTC Desire S disassembly stage 29 The LCD screen is now free. Disassembly is now complete. Reverse the whole procedure for reassembly.
